Aboriginal music at Nhulunbuy with Yolgnu youth

Well today at the Youth Forum here in Nhulunbuy I am setting up by the sea under some shade, the focus of the songwriting was working together like Balanda ga Yolgnu ( Aboriginal people and white people) Bukmak (working together)

And as we sat by the sea the youth of Nhulunbuy ( Gove ) started to write and talk about their ideas, working together ( Bukmak) respect for the land, each others stories and cultures, listening and learning from each other, helping each other ,

The chorus that we came up with the first group of Yolgnu youth

was You're my Wawa ( brother)

    Your'e my Yapa ( sister )

My Friend My Friend

Building strong lives
strong futures.

And after we started to sing this chorus some of the Yolgnu Women heard what was going on and came over and joined in with the next few groups, then I was able with their help put some more language into the song, and we started to laugh and Fiona was able to translate for me and encourage the younger ones with the process and by the end of the day we have a deadly song and we will record tomorrow from the watchtower looking over the ocean !

You know when the Yolgnu workers heard the song they instantly came over and started to help... they truly understand the importance of singing and songs and young people having their say through the music

Shellie Morris
